Is Your Hair Routine Causing Your Hair to Thin?

Healthy, glossy hair doesn’t start with your lengths, it starts at the scalp. Yet it’s often the most overlooked part of our routine. If you’re noticing thinning, excess shedding, or changes in your hair’s growth pattern, your scalp could be trying to tell you something.

Let’s break down what’s really happening, and how to fix it.

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle (and Why It Matters)

Hair doesn’t just grow continuously, it follows a cycle:

Anagen (Growth Phase): This is where your hair actively grows. The longer this phase lasts, the longer and thicker your hair can become.

Catagen (Transition Phase): A short stage where growth slows and the follicle begins to shrink.

Telogen (Resting Phase): Hair sheds to make way for new growth.

This cycle normally lasts avg; 12weeks , where you feel & find lots of hair everywhere.

Then it rests so no new hair looks like it’s growing and we panic slightly that we’re going bald (guilty!) but actually the hair has to push through 8 layers of skin so it is actually “growing” under skin before we see it.

Then we finally see little tufts around hairline and worry it’s breakage or “these bits never grow “

when actually those little tufts are 99% of the time the same length all over your head.

We have a test we do in salon to see this & it’s really to reassure our clients that there’s nothing to worry about and shows growth where we can’t see ourselves.

When your scalp is compromised, through buildup, irritation, or blocked follicles, this cycle can be disrupted. The result? Thinner hair, slower growth, and more shedding.

The Truth About Oiling Your Hair

Oiling is everywhere right now, and when done correctly, it can be incredible. But more isn’t always better.

Common mistake: Over-oiling with heavy oils

• Oils that are too heavy (like coconut oil) can block pores and suffocate hair follicles

• This leads to buildup, irritation, and even stunted hair growth

What to do instead:

Use lightweight oils that nourish without clogging

Rosemary oil is a standout, it’s known to support circulation and encourage healthy growth

Best routine:

• Oil your mid-lengths daily (lightly) for hydration

• Oil your scalp weekly, not every day

• Always wash thoroughly after scalp oiling

Why Scalp Detoxing is Non-Negotiable

Think of your scalp like skincare, if you don’t cleanse it properly, nothing else works.

Monthly Detox Benefits:

• Removes product buildup, oils, pollution, and hard water

• Clears follicles so new hair can grow freely

• Restores shine and vibrancy to colour-treated hair

• Prevents dryness and irritation

Top tip: A proper detox should leave your hair feeling squeaky clean, but not stripped. (Think how nice your face feels when you do a deep exfoliating routine and moisturise after)

Ingredients That Could Be Holding You Back

Many high-street products contain cheap fillers that can damage your scalp over time.

Watch out for:

Harsh sulphates : can strip and irritate

Parabens : can contribute to buildup and imbalance

What we recommend:

Sulphate-free formulas or those with gentler, “good” sulphates that cleanse without aggression
